In a time of uncertainty, people cling to those willing to pave the way to a brighter, more steadfast future. There should not be a time when your employee feels their loyalty to the success and completion of company goals outweighs yours. Creating loyalty within your business is achieved by how you speak about others, being on time and present to individual and team meetings, and offering support/guidance for growth. Loyalty, like many other valuable traits, is earned, not given, and should be consistently maintained through all levels of leadership.
The energy you bring will set the tone. Arriving to work on time, refraining from letting your emotions sway your decision-making, and keeping an upbeat demeanor will empower others to follow. Do what you love with enthusiasm and motivate your team to ensure success.
As a leader, it’s your responsibility to respond to change and execute new strategies that can adapt to non-linear uncertainties. As the world around us continues to evolve, employee demands will continue to evolve, and your response is required. Whether accommodating or not, knowing the limitations of your business and providing agility where able will increase trust and improve productivity.
Decisiveness will also greatly improve your employees’ trust in you. Your employees will look to you for answers, and if you don’t have them, find them. It’s nearly impossible to please everybody but if you are diligently making decisions for the good of your employees and your business it’s likely the majority will win. If you’re ever in a position where you don’t know what decision will best suit your employees don’t be afraid to ask. Everybody loves to feel heard.
A recent survey showed that over 75% of workers would consider a company’s culture prior to applying, and over 60% of workers care more about culture than salary. Acting in an unethical manner is a red flag to a potential and current employee who will likely seek alternative employment quickly. Unethical behavior can follow you for years to come and hinder your opportunity for future advancement (“cancel culture”).
Everybody loves a good pat on the back. Whether it’s something as little as thanking someone for showing up on time that day or simply thanking them for all the hard work they do every day. Public praise is also a good way to let your other employees know what achievements or behaviors are valued within your workplace. Something that might take you seconds to do will carry much greater effects into the future.
